Mr. King has served as an English teacher, College Counselor, District Testing Coordinator, and Director of Academic Programs at BASIS Charter Schools in San Antonio. He was also the Head of School at BASIS Ahwatukee in Phoenix, Arizona.
Before joining BASIS Charter Schools, Mr. King was an English department chair, AP English teacher, and boys’ tennis coach at Catalina Foothills High School in Tucson. He was also an adjunct writing instructor at Saint Louis University and an AP English Literature teacher at a private school in San Antonio, Texas. He is a Texas and Arizona certified teacher in English language arts, history, elementary education, and English as a second language.
Before entering the educational field, Mr. King was an academic instructor and intelligence officer in the United States Air Force. He earned a BA with honors in English from the University of North Alabama and an MA in English from Saint Louis University, where he was also a Loyola Fellow. Additionally, he holds an MA “en Estudios Culturales y Literarios Anglo-Americanos” from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in Madrid, Spain.
Dr. Richards joined BASIS Charter Schools in 2013, and has been the Head of Operations through the construction and conversion of each school in San Antonio. Previously, he served as Associate Dean of Academic Support at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Associate Professor of Naval Science at the University of Kansas, and as a high school NJROTC instructor. Dr. Richards also worked as a nuclear submarine officer for 22 years, visiting over 25 countries while participating in Cold War special operations missions and on a carrier battlegroup staff during Operation Desert Storm. He is a designated “Naval Education and Training Management Specialist” and holds a BS in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Michigan, an MEd in Vocational Education and an MPA from Valdosta State University, and a PhD in Education Policy and Leadership from the University of Kansas.
Amanda Martinez-Walthall joined the BASIS Shavano team in the summer of 2017 as the Curriculum Coordinator. Prior to joining the BASIS community, Amanda managed a cheerleading facility where she created a curriculum for all-star competitive cheerleaders as well as developed a leadership program for young athletes. Amanda also worked for the National Cheerleaders Association where she mentored and trained collegiate cheerleaders, high school and college level cheerleading coaches, and high school cheerleaders around the state of Texas.
Mrs. Walthall earned a BBA from St. Mary’s University where she majored in Marketing and Business Administration. As a native San Antonian, she enjoys volunteering each year at her alma mater during Fiesta Oyster Bake to help raise money for scholarships so that more students are able to attend St. Mary’s University and attain a university degree.
Mr. Leach previously served at BASIS San Antonio Primary North Central as an orchestra director and grade 5 choir teacher, and at BASIS San Antonio Shavano as Dean of Students for the Lower School Program. He moved from Houston to San Antonio, where he earned a BM in Music Education and an MA in Teaching from Trinity University. Mr. Leach is also the assistant coach of the middle school basketball teams and high school baseball team.
Ms. Parker joined BASIS San Antonio Primary Medical Center in 2015 as an English teacher and NJHS sponsor before transitioning to BASIS San Antonio Shavano as Dean of Students for the Upper School Program. She enjoys attending school sports and art events.
Ms. Parker earned a BS in English Education from Boston University, and holds teaching certifications in Texas and Massachusetts. She has experience teaching, mentoring, and tutoring in grades 5–12 throughout the greater Boston area, London, and Texas.
