Mr. Villafuerte attended San Diego State University on an academic scholarship majoring in mathematics with an emphasis in finance. Prior to becoming the Head of Operations at BASIS Phoenix, his previous experience includes working for a non-profit organization that specialized in micro-lending to small business owners in low-income areas. He admits to ‘stumbling’ upon BASIS and was astonished by the results and student achievement. He started teaching mathematics at BASIS Peoria in 2011 and helped open BASIS Phoenix the following year teaching Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, and AP Statistics. He then took over as the Director of Academic Programs at BASIS Phoenix helping guide the curriculum for his teachers and students. He recently served as the Head of Operations at BASIS Phoenix. Although he will miss working with the Upper School students, he is excited to work with many of their younger siblings and new students to BASIS Phoenix Primary.

As a native Arizonan, Ms. Ewald grew up in central Phoenix, and is a graduate of both the University of Arizona, where she earned her BS in Special Education & Rehabilitation and Grand Canyon University, where she completed her MA in Early Childhood Education. After completing her bachelor’s degree in Tucson, she went on to work as a Special Education Teacher with the Vail Unified School District in southeastern Tucson. With most of Ms. Ewald’s family living in Phoenix, she later moved back to the Phoenix area and worked at the elementary school she attended! During the course of her career, she has also opened and run a private preschool before coming to BASIS in 2014. Ms. Ewald started at BASIS Phoenix Central as a Kindergarten Teacher, later moving into a 1st grade Learning Expert Teacher position and then taking on the Subject Expert Teacher role for 1st grade Math and Science.
