Deirdre Ewald, M.Ed.

Head of School

As a native Arizonan, Ms. Ewald grew up in central Phoenix, and is a graduate of both the University of Arizona and Grand Canyon University with a BS in Special Education and a MEd in Early Childhood Education. Prior to joining BASIS in 2014, Ms. Ewald worked as an early childhood educator and in special education in both the Tucson and Phoenix communities. Ms. Ewald started at BASIS Phoenix Central when it opened, where she taught kindergarten and first grade for several years before joining BASIS Phoenix Primary in 2018 for its inaugural year. Being part of an educational program that holds students to a higher standard and delivers on opportunities for success had been incredibly rewarding. After supporting the BASIS Phoenix Primary community as the Director of Academic Programs, Ms. Ewald is thrilled to serve as the Head of School while continuing to support teachers, students and families in educational excellence!

Suzanne Miller

Suzanne Miller

Head of Operations

Suzanne Miller, the Head of Operations at BASIS Phoenix Primary, previously served as Head of Operations at BASIS Chandler Primary North, BASIS Scottsdale, and BASIS Chandler. Prior to her working at the schools, she worked as a Payroll Administrator and School Accountant at the BASIS.ed Central Office. Prior to joining the BASIS.ed Finance Division in January 2012, she was the Business Manager at Imagine Tempe charter school and spent seven years as the Director of Finance for The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale.

Mark Schwers

Mark Schwers

Director of Student Affairs

Born and raised in Iowa, Mark Schwers’ love for the outdoors brought him to Arizona in 2018. A graduate of Iowa State University with a BS in Elementary Education, focusing on Math, and then went on to teach Math, Special Education, and Social Skills for grades 6–8, and coach soccer.

Arriving in Arizona, Mr. Schwers started at BASIS Phoenix Primary in its inaugural year and has loved the many roles he has held on our campus, including grade 1 Learning Expert Teacher, grade 2 Math and Science Subject Expert Teacher, Dean of Grades K–2, and now the Director of Student Affairs. His passion for supporting students and teachers on our campus is focused on the social and emotional well-being of the community. He is very excited to grow our community of Firebirds and help everyone become their best.

Mary Foley

Mary Foley

Director of Academic Programs

Born and raised in southern Arizona, Ms. Foley moved to Flagstaff to attend Northern Arizona University, where she graduated with a BS in Elementary Education. Relocating to Phoenix after graduating from NAU, Ms. Foley began her teaching career with BASIS as a 3rd grade LET at BASIS Chandler Primary North in its inaugural year. In 2018, Ms. Foley transferred to BASIS Scottsdale Primary West, where she transitioned from a 3rd grade LET into administration as the school’s Curriculum Coordinator. Transitioning into administration allowed Ms. Foley to realize her passion for supporting schools from an academics standpoint, and inspired her to begin pursuing her MEd in Learning Design and Technologies at Arizona State University. Ms. Foley is thrilled to serve BASIS Phoenix Primary as the Director of Academic Programs and looks forward to ensuring a positive, enriching experience for the entire Firebird community!
