Monika Mendoza is the Head of School for BASIS Oro Valley. She has 16 years of experience in education as a teacher and an administrator. Her experience spans the halls of college prep and drop-out recovery. She holds a MEd with an emphasis in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University, a BA in Education from the University of Arizona, and an Arizona Principal Certification. Ms. Mendoza joined BASIS Oro Valley in 2014, serving for two years as the Dean of Students for grades 6–12, before becoming the Director of Academic Programs. Ms. Mendoza is excited to lead BASIS Oro Valley as the Head of School and will continue to serve as a liaison for parents, students, and teachers.
Peter Cano is the Head of Operations for BASIS Oro Valley. Before joining the school staff, he had executive roles in operations, finance, and human resources with education technology companies. Mr. Cano is a Tucson native who attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York and has an MBA from Duke University at Durham, North Carolina. Paying forward the positive influence Mr. Cano received from his teachers, he looks forward to ensuring teachers have the resources they need, coordinating the support from parents and guardians, and providing a safe and secure learning environment for the students.
Leigh Preuss earned her BFA from the University of Arizona and has been at BASIS Oro Valley since 2010. Before serving as the Director of Student Affairs, she taught for five years and also served as the Dean of Students for two years. She was the mentor for the other deans in the BASIS Charter Schools network and is currently the mentor for the other Directors of Student Affairs. Ms. Preuss enjoys building strong relationships with the staff, families, and the students at BASIS Oro Valley.
Jennifer Wechsler is the Director of Academic Programs for BASIS Oro Valley. She has 17 years of experience teaching both middle and high school mathematics, including 9 years with BASIS Oro Valley. In addition to serving as Subject Advisor for all BASIS network Algebra I teachers, Ms. Wechsler also piloted the SPORK Algebra I math curriculum, with a special emphasis on collaborating with the development team to ensure that content was accessible to middle school students. She holds a BA in Mathematics from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA. Ms. Wechsler is passionate about the community at BASIS Oro Valley and is excited to grow into the role of administrator. Her priority is to help the school run efficiently and to facilitate communication between students, parents, and teachers.
