Dr. Simon Hale’s formal education includes earning a Bachelor of Science degree from James Madison University, and both a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.. While at James Madison University his own interest in teaching began to develop as he participated in physics and science outreach shows at the local middle and high schools. This interest was solidified while teaching undergraduate courses at Georgetown.
After graduating from Georgetown University he was excited to accept the position as a physics teacher at BASIS Independent Silicon Valley, helping found and define that school from its beginning. The same reasons that drew him to teach at BASIS motivated him to take on a larger role within the school. Those reasons were and are inspiring students to become lifelong learners who respect knowledge, creating self-sufficient learners who appreciate the correlation between hard work and success, and cultivating individuals who can identify and follow their passions. In the second year of operation, Dr. Hale became the Director of Student Affairs at BASIS Independent Silicon Valley. He was thrilled to take on a broader role in the students’ lives, helping to build a culture of support and excellence.
It is with great excitement that Dr. Hale join BASIS Phoenix, eager to expand upon the phenomenal success the school have already experienced. As Head of School, Dr. Hale looks forward to getting to know all of the BASIS Phoenix families and building a strong community united behind a common goal.
Mr. Villafuerte attended San Diego State University on an academic scholarship majoring in mathematics with an emphasis in finance. Prior to becoming the Head of Operations at BASIS Phoenix, his previous experience includes working for a non-profit organization that specialized in micro-lending to small business owners in low-income areas. He admits to ‘stumbling’ upon BASIS and was astonished by the results and student achievement. He started teaching mathematics at BASIS Peoria in 2011 and helped open BASIS Phoenix the following year teaching Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, and AP Statistics. He then took over as the Director of Academic Programs at BASIS Phoenix helping guide the curriculum for his teachers and students. He recently served as the Head of School at BASIS Scottsdale Primary in their inaugural year. Although he will miss the little ones, he is happy to re-join the BASIS Phoenix community.
Ms. Mumaw joined BASIS Phoenix in 2012 as Academic Support Coordinator. As Academic Support Coordinator, Ms. Mumaw monitored and provided support for students struggling academically or organizationally. When she became Dean of Students, an element of discipline was added to her already impressive skillset. With this great foundation, Ms. Mumaw is excited to be working even more closely with her students. As Director for grades 5-7, she will be monitoring various aspects of student life, such as Academic Support and tutoring, to help them feel successful both as students and as individuals. Ms. Mumaw will continue working with students on study/organizational skills as well as time management techniques and self-regulated learning. Throughout her time at BASIS, Ms. Mumaw has also taught Egyptian style dance during WorldFest, and American Sign Language during Project Week!
