Elizabeth Thies is the Head of School for grades 6-12 at BASIS Oro Valley. She was formally the Director of Students Affairs at BASIS Oro Valley from 2014-2016. Before that time, she was the Dean of Students, Athletic Director, Academic Support Advisor and a teacher at BASIS Tucson and then BASIS Tucson North. Since she began working at BASIS in 2007, Elizabeth has developed successful Academic Support programs for grades 5-12, created a curriculum for a unique Upper School Study Skills course, built a successful sports program, and coached three different high school soccer teams to SAAA league championships. Mrs. Thies holds a Masters in Educational Psychology and a BS in Liberal Studies from Northern Arizona University. Before joining the BASIS staff, Mrs. Thies was a member of the Tucson Police Department and also served as a noncommissioned officer in the United States Army. In her free time, she enjoys playing the guitar, riding her road bike, and spending time with her family.
LaShawn Shorbe is the Head of Operations for grades 6-12 at BASIS Oro Valley. She joined BASIS as a Director of Operations in 2016 and is also a proud BASIS parent. Before joining the BASIS staff, LaShawn enjoyed a career in human resources and served as a retail manager. Mrs. Shorbe holds an MBA from Eller College at the University of Arizona and is a member of the Society of Human Resource Managers. In the average day, she walks more than 10,000 steps though the hallways of our campus as she checks to ensure that our teachers and students have everything they need for a successful day at school.
Cameron Louis is the Director of Student Affairs for grades 6-12 at BASIS Oro Valley. Previously, Mr. Louis served as an AP Government & Politics Teacher for BASIS Oro Valley, as a Director & then Head of School for BASIS DC, and helped recruit new teachers to the BASIS network of schools. Before joining BASIS, Mr. Louis taught English and History in Chicago for six years and served two schools as a Varsity Basketball Coach. He holds a BA in English Education from Michigan State University, a Masters in Educational Leadership from Central Michigan University, and a Masters in Teaching Arts from National Louis University. When not at work, Mr. Louis cherishes every moment with his daughter Margaret and his wife Linda and enjoys reading, golfing, watching college football and basketball and wishing he was swimming in Lake Michigan.
Monika Mendoza is the Director of Academic Programs for BASIS Oro Valley. She has 15 years of experience in education working as a teacher and an administrator; her experience spans the halls of college prep and drop out recovery. She holds a Masters of Education with an emphasis in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University and a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Arizona. Ms. Mendoza also holds her Arizona Principal Certification. Ms. Mendoza served BOV as the 6-12 Dean of Student for two years and hopes to continue to serve as a liaison for parents, students, and teachers. She has served several years fundraising for the Tucson Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and as a Tucson native is an avid U of A basketball fan.
